If you can stay with 8.6, do so. 9.1 will eat an additional 2-4 MB of RAM,
and trimming extensions will not significantly reduce it, as 9 allocates
itself RAM in a different manner than 8. 9.2 is only interesting to people
running X. I had to use 9.1 because of a conflict with the Sonnet upgrade.
The speed hit is not tremendous, but one does notice it.

Office 2001 will work fine, though it will open a bit slowly; Photoshop 6
will chug. Keystroke macros no longer work in Word 2001 in 8.6, in case that
interests you.
