Well, I must report to everyone on this list what happened with Apple this
morning. It's definitely something to share because I know dozens here have
sent your Powerbook 5300 through Apple's REA program and expected that a new
logic board was put in. You too may have been misled.

I confirmed with prior 'original' owner again that he previously sent in
unit for loose power connector and that he never made any of his own
repairs. I then raised issue with Apple that REA states: "REPLACE LOGIC
BOARD" as THE solution to fix loose power connector as quoted in Apple's
REA. The individual upstairs in customer service, said that it was up to
Apple Repair Depot to determine whether or not to replace logic board, or
just re-solder it. He said they apparently chose to solder it as the
method of bringing the machine into working order.

I said, but Apple's own REA language states: "Replace Logic Board as THE
solution to fix the problem. It doesn't say 'repair', it says 'replace'".
I also told him that the prior owner tried to get it repaired again but grew
frustrated because Apple wouldn't.

> FROM REA #30425:
> PowerBook 5300 and PowerBook 190 computers:
>
> * The AC power connector on the logic board can become loose or inoperative.
> - Affected serial numbers: xx605xxxxxx and below
> - Solution: Replace logic board.

So it seems, via Apple's REA, they never really replaced the logic board on
this, or likely on many other units. Which means, Apple did not follow the
original intent (or what the public was led to believe) of their (REA)
Repair Extension Program. Sad to say, many who thought you got a new logic
board under the REA, may have been entirely misled by Apple's statement as
well.

To top it off, the individual I spoke with told me I could still send it in,
but they would have to charge me. He then said the proper fix would be to
"replace the logic board". (Love it!) I suggested he listen to the tape of
our conversation to hear the 'logic' of it all.

There is no telling how may times consumers have been misled in this
situation. Of course as I said before, I do realize we're talking about a
seven year old machine here, but there is that 'principal' thing and the
same practice was probably carried out for all of those 7 years.

I am a big supporter of Apple, and like others here, I put up with all the
harassment from my pc friends. Does Apple still understand what our loyalty
means to the company? I've only been able to purchase one new Apple
computer since I've been using computers, and that was in the early days
when I bought a Mac Plus, then I bought an Apple store demo Color Classic
II. The high cost of those two, could have bought me two top of the line
computers today, and yet they are worth near nothing now. Today I use a
pretty fast Umax s900 G3 because I can't afford a new Apple G4. I sure
can't afford a new powerbook and I may never own one.

My point somewhere in there, Apple may be forgetting the value of its loyal
customers, who ironically funded the company's growth into what may becoming
one of those conglomerates w/o a conscience we love to hate. But we are
still the loyal users of Apple and we are the ones who bring long-term value
to the product. Must be worth something or am I just too naive?

If Apple's REA contract states that "Replace Logic Board" as THE solution,
then Apple should live by that WRITTEN statement.

Dear Apple, I am one of your loyal users, but please recognize I take issue
with this situation.
