The latest OS that will run on this system works fine...I have 9.1 running on a 5300c right now. > It would be great if I could install the > following software: > -- emacs http://mac-emacs.sourceforge.net/ > -- Perl No problem, just download MacPerl http://www.macperl.com/ > -- Java virtual machine The highest level Java supported by the classic Mac OS is MRJ 2.2.5 which is Java 1.1.8 http://developer.apple.com/java/classic.html > -- Net Beans or Forte four Java Forte requires a Java 2 implementation, meaning JDK 1.2-1.3, as does NetBeans, so on a *mac* OS this is right out. > Is there an operating system I could install on a 5300cs with 64 meg of > ram and a 750 meg hard drive that would allow me to run the list of > software? Will I need a larger hard drive or memory? Since you won't get the NetBeans stuff to run at all undel a classic OS, your entire wishlist just isn't possible. However all the others merely require OS 8.1 or better. Of the three main OS'es of this level 8.1, 8.6 and 9.0, I'd recommend 8.6; it has more native PPC code than 8.1 and doesn't take up as much ram as 9.0. However any one will work just fine. Many people will claim that 7.5 or such is the superior because it uses less memory, this may be so for 68K 'Books, but for PPC ones, especially lower-end ones like the 5300, you want as much PPC native code as possible. If you're desperate to do all of the above, you *may* be able to get it done using Mklinux (http://www.mklinux.org/ ) so long as you don't need SCSI.
