Hi >> I've able to upgrade it to 117 MHz 603e and to 40 Mb of RAM ...
>You must have one of the rare NewerTech cards with on-CPU RAM. Most have zero >on-CPU RAM, so the maximum RAM on a PPC-upgraded 540 would be 32 MB. >Do you have the proper NewerTech control panel installed? >A 167 MHz NewerTech PPC upgrade card will power-on as a 117 MHz card, unless >the NewerTech control panel is installed. >So, it is possible that your 117 MHz card is really a 167 MHz card. Ok. I've downloaded two files from newertech - one is NuPowr 500/1400 System enabler, the other is NuPowr 500/1400 cache control panel. The system enabler extension (Nupower system update v 1.2) runs fine (although I see no difference) but the control panel says it cannot run on this computer (obviously its only for the 183 MHz version with cache). The guy that gave me the machine told me it was powerpc upgraded to 100-something mhz. I presumed it was the 117 MHz upgrade. However, this is what Apple System profiler states: Machine: PowerBook 500 series PPC Upgrade Machine ID: 126 Finder: V8.1 System. V8.1 US Processor: PowerPC 603e at 100 MHz Active Enabler: n/a OpenDoc: v1.2.1 Memory Installed: 40 Mb Virtual Memory: is off: Total Memory: 40 Mb So what do I have in the box? And where do I get the appropriate software for it? >Other than the ultra-scarce 1 GB true SCSI drives which IBM made very >briefly, there are converted drives available in just about any size you want. How does one go about getting a 'converted' drive that is supposed to be 17mm high (probably 2.5"). I mean - can I get any 2.5" IDE drive and just convert it somehow? >A Rev. C PC card cage will work in any 5xx, upgraded or not. Those are obviously extremely rare. Does anybody know of a source? Regards, Boris -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
