I've been using a Matshita UJDA330 8x4x24 CDRW I got on eBay as a reader, however I've not been able burn as neither Toast Ti 5.1.x and Apple's CD Burner authoring package recognizes the drive as a burner. Reputedly 'B's Recorder Gold' _does_ work, though I've yet to find a vendor from which to buy a copy.
With respect to installing another mechanism into your 1400's CD module, you _must_ use a 12x module. That unit has the correct interface board to connect to 'standard' laptop CD drive connectors.
