>I have been successfully making 1X burns from the powerbook with Toast >5.1.4 with this burner, the "only" issue is that for some reason the Toast >5 progress doesn't update on the 1400, it always says "preparing" even >though it's actually burning. I've not emailed Roxio about this yet. They won't support Toast on a pre-3400 PB, which they make explicit. My Yamaha would only do 1x (CDR) or 2x (CDRW) - not sure about 8824. 2x wasn't so bad with CDRW on my 5300. But as I said, any desktop '040 (except the LC/Quadra 630) supports SM 4.3, which meant that my old Quadra 700 and LC475 could easily out-burn any pre-3400 PowerBook (note also that it's not just software - the revised SCSI chip appeared with the 040s, was enabled in s/w originally and then burnt into ROM on late Quadras. The PBs didn't get the revised SCSI controller until the 3400 (and 2400).
Non-SCSI PBs can use the Adaptec Cardbus card (OS X drivers are meant to be under development), although supports only 3 devices but is SM 4.3 compliant. Still a lot of high-end SCSI scanners out there...
