Below find Asante's instructions to me when I had difficult getting my
FriendlyNet card to work on my 5300. Also included are the Asante Tech
Support numbers. They are very responsive and helpful. Good luck.

Sounds like you have a TCP/IP problem and are using OS/8.5.1 or OS/8.6.
Open the TCP/IP control panel, in the 'Edit' in the tool bar, select
'User
Mode" and click on 'Advanced", close this box. Now in the control
panel
click on the 'Options' radio-button and in that next box make sure that
the
"X" is removed from the 'Load only when needed 'BOX'. This prevents
TCP/IP
being loaded until a program call for it, like Netscape
Communicator(tm),
which assumes that TCP/IP is loaded when it attempts to contact the
Internet.

According to a MacWindows article found on the web, there is a known
problem
with OS 8.5.x and 8.6 that causes network transfer rates to dramatically
drop after upgrading when AsanteFast 10/100 PCI cards or Farallon cards
are
used. OS 8.5 and 8.6 installer copies a file called "Apple Enet" into
the
extensions folder when you have one of these cards.

The Apple Enet is the driver for an Apple Ethernet card, and interferes
with
the performance of the Asante cards. Apparently all versions of
AsantFast
10/100 PCI card is affected by this problem. The NIC-PCI may also be
affected, although the article does not indicate this card
specifically.

This problem includes time-outs and other strange performance and is not
related to the drivers in use with our card. The most likely cause of
this
is the SLPPlugin extension installed with the OS. We recommend that
this
extension be disabled in Extension manager and then the system
restarted.

Description:
After upgrading to Apple OS 8.5, network performance drops dramatically.
Transfer rates can drop down to 100 Kbytes per second in some cases. A
clean
install to a previous OS improves performance. If the computer is a
client,
the client only will experience network performance degradation. If the
computer is a server however, some or all of the clients may experience
a
decrease in performance due to the decrease in server performance.

Resolution:
To help resolve the slow performance on the 8.5.1 systems try the
following
procedure which includes the following steps:

Turn off the following in the Extensions Manager and then reboot the
computer.

Apple E-Net extensions
DNS Extension
SLPPlugin Extension
Personal Web-Sharing

An Apple TIL file (#24691) describes the new Mac OS 8.5 Network Services
Location (NSL) Technology. The NSL is made up of a Manager and a set of
plug-ins that gather data via particular network protocols such as DNS.
As
noted on the MRP, Mac 8.5's SLPPlugin (Service Location Protocol) and
DNSPlugin (Domain Name Service) extensions are NSL plug-ins. If you
have
Virex virus software running then you should either temporarily disable
it,
or get the upgrade version of Virex for OS 8.5. I believe the latest
version is 5.9.1. This will cause problems with the network.

If these items do not produce significant results then you may try the
following procedure:

Create a folder on the desktop and name it "Old Prefs"
Note the TCP/IP and/or MACTCP setting on paper, Then:

Move the following items to this folder:
                AppleShare PREP
                AppleTalk Preferences
                ASLM Preferences
                MACTCP Preferences
                MACTCP DNR
                TCP/IP Preferences
NOTE: Again it is suggested that you save the TCP/IP and/or MACTCP
address
information in an external file in the Temp folder or write that
information
on paper to speed the restoration of your Macintosh's TCP/IP settings
(if
this is necessary).

If this procedure does not help then try Zapping the PRAM on the system,
re-establish the parameters effected and then test.

Please call us if you need additional information or support, or please
be
sure to include all previous correspondence to your replies, thanks.
