I'm surprised no one has mentioned yet that the OS 8.6 updater you're
talking about is meant to update 8.5, and can't be used to update 8.1.

No wonder ...

I bit the bullet and bought 8.5 on the LEM Swaplist (for about $30), then
updated to 8.6 so I could add a USB/Firewire combo card to my PM 6500. The
main complaint I have about it is that it boots sooooooooo slooooooooow,
even though I disabled as many extensions as I could. On the other hand it
so stable it just about never crashes! On the other hand I've kept the
1400/166 on 8.1 despite the chatter I've seen here from people who swear by
8.6. I figure, what's the rush ... ?
