Yeah, I never thought the 603e did a very good job of running 8.5/.6, as
the more native code (54% in 8.5) likes a heap of RAM cache as well as L2
cache. Although I do have a slim version of 9.1 on my 601 8100/100 and
it's not at all bad for doing 9.1-type things.

The 6500s weren't a bad design at all, and a 300 or so MHz G3, if found
at the right price, can make these pretty good. Of course, with Beige G3
MT and DTs going for very little these days, the upgrade is almost
certainly uneconomic. At least on the G3, though, you can run 9.2.2
(9.2.1 offered a considerable speed boost).

I'd also keep the 1400 on 8.1, although you could make an 8.6 partition
(or 9.1) if you wanted to run iTunes, for instance. True, 8.5 does have
PPC native QD, but the 1400 video subsystem just can't take enough
advantage of it - the 1400's Archille's heel.

Cheers,

RD
