OK, I've got more tech info about the Orinoco cards, and the 1400. I'm
going to append it to my old email so all info is in one place. This is
from one of their support engineers, not just cust. service. I will test
this shortly, my card is just about here, but Amazon lied about the Netgear
MR314 being on shelf and it will be a bit before it gets to me. I hate
that, I doubt I'll order equipment from Amazon again (usually what happens
is the reseller waits for X hundred/thousand units to be ordered, then
places an order w/ the manufacturer, and gets a nice discount on the
volume, of which they pass on a fraction to you. Of course they fib to
you about it being in stock in the first place, so you actually place your
order...then you wait...). Anyway I digress. The part about the WEP
encryption method could be what is causing the troubles posted here earlier.
-------------------

"As far as firmware goes, anything between 6.08 to 8.10 should be OK. I have
not tested 8.42 or heard reporte yea or nea on this. New cards are
appearing with 7.28 or 7.42 out of the box, so a mod should be unnecessary.
The customer would need a windows PC to accomplish a firmware update anyway.
Make sure any previous attempts at 7.2 are uninstalled after being removed
from the extensions folder, before setting up the older drivers.
Also, encryption can be a source of frustration. The AP must NOT be using a
shared key authentication method, (open auth / static WEP only). Also there
often are "passphase" or "friendly" key input hashing routines on these
AP's. Make sure the customer gets the "network equivalent" hex WEP key and
applies this to the card profile.
To firmly rule out any encryption issues, remove encryption in case there is
trouble."
