I haven't looked at the back of a 5300, so I'm guessing here, but, here's how it works on my 3400... First, what type of "funky connector" do you have? Is it a 15 pin three row connector? (Thats whats on teh 3400) If so, it's not really that funky ;-) That connector is a standard VGA connector on all PC based machines. It's smaller than the standard Mac video connector, so I wonder if thats why it wasn't incorporated on the Powerbooks. Anyway, it will hook up to any standard monitor just fine, or, if you have a Mac monitor, you do need to get the adapter to convert the different plug ends... When I fire up the 3400 with the external monitor attached, I need to go into the Monitor COntrol Panel and switch from the "800x600" local machine option to one of the other options. THis then uses the external monitor, but not the built in screen! I must then, when I'm finish, switch it back to the regular display, or, simply shut down and next time I boot up, it will default there... Of course, I'm using 1024x768 when I go external so it can't display on both screens since the 3400's native screen only supports up to 800x600... Hope some of that is helpful.
