Sionnach,

Well, no, the 5300 does not have a VGA connector. My Wallstreet,
TwinTurbo 128, and Voodoo3 all have, but not the 5300. Plus, I have
about 10 VGA->Mac monitor adapters lying around here.... The
technical name for the port is "VID-14" I guess. It sounds like it
is electrically compatible w/ the standard DB-15 mac monitor
connector, but in a different form factor - a full size DB-15 (or even
a VGA connector) is too large to fit in the small space left for PDS
expansion in the 5300/190 series case.

PowerBooks behave differently across the board when it comes to
external video. My Wallstreet works great - shut down or put it to
sleep, attach a display to the VGA connector, start or wake the 'book
back up, and presto-change-o external monitor in video mirror mode at
1024x768 (simulscan w/ the LCD) - the PC folks were all really amazed
at how easy it was when I gave presentations w/ the LCD projector in
class.

Also, I didn't think the 3400 actually had 2nd monitor capability:
just supports 1 monitor at a time (be it LCD or external) - the video
card isn't all that powerful. Not that the 5300's is either, but I've
never played w/ the external video card (and it's a different
architecture anyhow - do the two displays even share the same
circuitry?).

Oh well. Never mind about the connector question - I looked on eBay
and found several (that also work on the 160, 165, 180, 520, and 540
'books). So that answers 1 question. (Here's a
picture: <http://www.adeal.com/images/pbvideoadapter.jpg>)

But the other still stands: If I plug a monitor into the external
video port and fire up the powerbook, will it mirror what is supposed
to be on the built-in display or not?

Peace,
Drew
