Can't recall if you've already done this. I just remembered a similar situation with system 8.1 on a couple of Quads. The solution was to do something like, selecting the hd in the finder, do a "get info", and then turn on some "make this a shared volume" option. I've never had to do this in any other system version, but have had more than one incident of this with 8.1. Don't give up, it is definetly possible, I've done it numerous times between 8.1 and 9.1, albeit on other hardware than yours.
