Hi Cameron, A big thank you for your work on this so far . . . I've just been testing 3c589C and D cards on my 1400c/G3-333 under 9.1, and thought I'd give a user's report.
I had been using a Farallon PC card (589 based I think) with Farallon's 3.0 driver. First go-round with a 3c589d (this one Dell branded btw), I just dropped 'your' 3com driver into my system folder and restarted. When the 3com driver loaded it dropped me into MacsBug: System error #85 = dsMBarNFnd at 400A73E4 _InitMenus+00024 18-Sep-2002 9:17:32 PM (since boot = 1 minute) (It looks like "3Com PC Card" was loading.) Machine = #310 (PowerBook1400), System $0910, sysu = $01008000 ROM version $077D, $32F3, $0000 (ROMBase $40000000) VM is on; paging is currently safe (and it probably isn't VM's fault) NIL^ = $00010000 Stack space used = +1328 Address 400A73E4 is in the ROM at _InitMenus+00024 I force-restarted with extensions off and disabled the Farallon driver, restarted again and the 3com card worked once the driver loaded. Throughtput over my 10bt hub wasn't tops averaging around 550KB/s using Timbuktu and tcp/ip, compared with well over 800KB/s using the Farallon card and 3.0 driver. 'Funny' thing is, when I swapped the extensions back (Farallon enabled, 3com disabl.) the Farallon card refused to be recognized until I reloaded the 3.0 driver from the Farallon installer disk image. It's as though the other driver 'breaks' the original Farallon driver that's kept in the System file. I again replaced the Farallon ext with the 3com vers and the PB MacsBugged during boot again just as before. I hit rb (reboot) in MacsBug and just let it boot, without problem this time. Now TCP/ip works, but AppleTalk doesn't. I hadn't checked AT first time though. Hmm this is now with a 3COM-brand 3c589c though. OK, just tried a 3COM-brand 3c589D and it didn't work with AT either (haven't rebooted yet tho.) Try with a restart . . . OK, back to report that this "D" version works with AT where the "C" did not. tcp/ip works OK with this card too, tho thruput remains well under 600KB/s. I peeked inside 'your' 3com driver with ResEdit and see it isn't the same Farallon 3.0 driver I've been using. That driver has part of it's resources loaded into the System file by the installer (the .ENET0 driver, specifically.) Plus the older driver on which you based the 3com doohicky has a bunch of bits not present in the the 3.0 version. Can you detail the mods you made to the Farallon driver, and which version did you use? In any case, thanks for the _working_ drivers, they _do_ work and that's a helluva lot better state of affairs than before!!
