Hi,

When I got my 3400c/240, it shipped with OS 7.6 installed
and in it's original CD, included with it was the OS 8.1 CD
installer. At the time, I got the full RAM upgrade bringing
it to 144Mb.
I immediately installed OS 8.1 and soon upgraded to 8.6. It
worked very good for a long time and don't remember having
any complaints about it. Then I installed 9.1 some time ago
and have loved it ever since, it's been very reliable and
pretty fast (considering it's and old machine), for a while
I used it as my main computer doing multimedia CD-Roms and
graphic design projects without complaints.
On system 9.1 I use pretty demanding apps such as Photoshop
6, Freehand 9, Fireworks 4, Bryce, Flash, Director, etc. and
they all work very good, obviously somewhat slow, but good
enough.

I think the choice in OS should depend on the types of apps
you are going to use, the amount of RAM you have and the
size of your HD. System 7.6 is much lighter that 9.1, so
you'll have more space on your disk left, and the memory
requirements are much less also.

So, after trying system 7.6 for a few days, 8.1 for a few
months, 8.6 for a little longer and 9.1 for a looong time, I
would recomend you install 9.1 if you have enough RAM, which
means basically the full 144Mb.

About the upgrades, there's not much you can do:
1. Upgrade the RAM to is max.
2. Get a new PRAM battery... FAST!!
3. If you need it, upgrade the HD (I've always used the 3GB
original, but the 3400 is no longer my main computer).
4. You can get relatively cheap accesories for this pb, such
as Wacom tablets or cammeras. I have an old, small Wacom
tablet that I love.
5. You could get also another HD or a Zip drive to fit into
the CD slot.

Well, I hope that helps...
