I just ordered 4 of the $8 cards after having got probably 7 of these same
cards at their old $14 price over the last year.

The dongles they came with all work with the cards. I had used one and
just checked all of them after your post. (I think) They screwed up your
order. My understanding is that the cards are used; they get new dongles
and ship them out. The boxes I have are labelled 3c-pc-tp-cbl and the
cable itself is a 974302-1 according to the little silver tag. This cable
works just fine with either a "real" 3COM 589D or a Dell branded,
relabelled 589D (which is what the 4 cards I got recently are,
Dell-labelled 3COMs). Most earlier shipements were 3COM-branded. Same
card, different sticker, just like the Farallon "Mac" version.

I am not using the drivers from the floodgap.com site; I install the full
Farallon driver installation, then add one extension that is just the
Farallon extension modified to accept "3COM" as the card ID string. Works
fine with both my real Farallon card (with its monster dongle) and these
3COM 359D's. A guy on another list made the mod and sent these to me.

Barring screwups the $8 card should/will actually work just fine by itself
(if you don't count the patched driver as something extra). Did you phone
the guys? They've been pleasant in the past when I called. Compare the
part numbers I mention above and if they don't match what you got, ask for
the right part.

Testing the other 3 cards has made me late this AM! :) But I was going to
wonder about them all day otherwise....

HTH.
