I just finished lengthening my dongle cable (normally
about 8 inches long) to 14 feet long. This way I can
use my Kanga (same as 3400 as far as this issue is
concerned) while sitting on the couch or at the desk
with a 14 foot range of mobility. Into the female end
of the dongle I plug in my Faralon EtherMac iPrint
adapter and a phone line. My Stylewriter plugs into
the iPrint adapter. Now I have my modem and my printer
attached to my Kanga with only one 14 foot long cable.
Also have a lengthened power supply cable.

As for the pinout question... the center two pins in
the RJ-45 jack in the back of the 3400 are the two
phone line wires for the modem.

Looking into the jack on the back of the 3400 with pin
one being the left most pin:

1--NC
2--NC
3---------------one of a twisted pair A
4--phone wire (twisted pair in dongle)
5--phone wire (twisted pair in dongle)
6---------------one of a twisted pair A
7---------------one of twisted pair B
8---------------one of twisted pair B

On a somewhat unrelated subject, but may be of
interest to 3400/Kanga owners, I have come accross two
3400 internal modems that did not work. In both cases
the problem turned out to be a burned out surface
mount fuse on the modem. I soldered a piece of 1/3 amp
fuse wire accross the SMD fuse, covered it with some
glue to protect it, and they worked like new. I got
the fuse wire by breaking open a standard glass tube
fuse. So, don't toss that 3400 modem that won't work.
Either fix it or give it too me ;-)

Greg
