I have had this happen to a 3400 and it turned out to be the CCFL
(florescent tube backlight).  One test you could try is to put the 3400
in the fridge and cool it way down. I would expect the backlight
flicker to become worse if the CCFL is on its way out. It may not
necessarily flicker more but it may get much dimmer and pinkish or
orangeish in color.
