Sounds like hardware and not software so I seriously doubt that doing anyhting with the OS version or a control panel will take care of it.
Greg had a good suggestion on the flouresent tube... Ideally, if that is taking a turn, it would be better to plan on replacing the entire FL Inverter board, then to try and replace just the tube... FL inverters should be able to be had readily enough from inexpensive sources such as ebay and the like. But, in addition, before changing any parts, you could try to cool the machine down, as Greg suggested. If it were mine, I would also remove the LCD assembly cover and check out the wiring harness running to the FL Inverter baord and LCD components. Look for any signs of it being pinched or taking excessive wear (especially around the hinges) If you see anything that looks suspicious, try rerouting the cable slightly so that it has more freedom in it's channel and see if that helps. I would continue tracing the cable down into the lower assembly and checking for kinks as far as you can see... Unless your experienced in breaking a machine down, I would probably leave it at that for a first run. I wouldn't recommend pulling a lot of components from the lower case to check it further unless you can pinpoint it a little more.
