Just "acquired" this machine from my daugter who used it (rather sorely,
it seems) for the last 4 years. Lugged it everywhere and used it
constantly. A few weeks ago she had it plugged in to recharge and went
off for several hours. Upon returning she said it was "hot enough to fry
eggs" and it wouldn't start.

She took it to the campus Apple Service folks who ran some test to the
tune of $90 and said it looked like "something serious" that could cost
big bucks. She opted for a new G4 PowerBook and handed the G3 to me to
"play with."

I hauled it home and left it on the charger for a couple of hours and hit
the power button. Nothing. Reset the Power Manager a few times and
finally got it to boot. Ran it for a few hours and put it to sleep.
Wouldn't restart. Reset the Power Manager a few more times and got it to
boot again.

Shut it down for the night and it restarted OK this morning. Let it go to
sleep on its own and only got a gray screen on an attempt to wake via
shift key.

Three fingered salute gave me a start up chime, then nothing.

Reset the Power Manager MANY more times. Nothing but a faint "click" and
a very short flash of the backlight each time.

Trouble shooting chart in the service manual says to start replacing
parts to fix. First on the "list" is the "power supply card" (part
number: 66102039).

My question: Does anyone have any "first-hand" experience with a similar
problem? If so, Is this the "most likely" fix?

Thanks in advance!

Ken

Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.
