Many people have reported using virtual memory set to a flash card in 
the pcmcia slot as working reasonably well.

The trick is to format the card as a mac disk, which usually means you 
turn of PC Exchange in Extensions manager, inserting the card, and then 
formatting the card when asked to.

I expect a sufficiently large card could easily hold the system and 
several apps...even 128mb cards are pretty cheap these days. I don't 
know if you can boot from one, though.
