Michael, You can use a Compact Flash card (or any card that has a type II PCMCIA reader, I'd guess) as a quasi-hard drive (that's how it shows up on the desktop) for virtual memory or for cache memory in web browsers. It does NOT increase the amout of RAM you can use, so use as a RAM disk is out.
I tried using a 128 MB SanDisk Compact Flash card as an emergency boot "drive" (a lot smaller than carrying around a CD-ROM drive), but I could never get my 5300cs to boot from it successfully (I recall "bus error" to be the dominant fault). I did share some correspondence where it was implied that there might be a difference between manufacturers and achieving success with my intended use, but I never bought another brand to try it out. I also received correspondence from 1400 owners which said this application (boot disk) worked for them. I also tried it for VM but I did not notice any speed difference in the short time I used it. I may go back and try it again. I'm looking forward to some success stories with a 5300 machine and a CF card as a boot disk on this thread. :-) Regards, Bob Eye Dallas, TX > Date: Fri, 1 Nov 2002 15:49:15 -0500 > From: "Michael R.
