The idea of the "Smart" batteries in the 500 series is that the chip on the batteries will control the charging and do the right thing. In general, it works well but the the software can get confused. A utility called EMMPathy can fix on chip errors and patch the "Sleep Bug" that plagues some 500 series Powerbooks.
