I've never tried setting up virtual memory on the CF/PCI card setup, 
however in informal test just calling up fairly large digital camera 
files from the CF card versus the hard drive, I wouldn't say it is 
really all that slow. The 4200 rpm drives in these laptops are not 
exactly speed demons themselves.
Another thing to keep in mind is that not all CF cards are created 
equal, speed wise.

That said, I seem to remember seeing plug in PCMCIA hard drives 
somewhere recently at a pretty reasonable price. I'm not sure if one of 
these would work with the '2400 though.

BTW, congratulations on getting your hands on a 2400! I would love to 
have one of those.
