Well, I can really only speak about a 1400c. A CF card can
be formatted and used as a volume you can set to VRAM, but,
as you say, they are a bit slower than a real HD. The thing
to know is that search rates (lookups) are faster then most
HD's, but transfer speeds are slower. If you can get an IBM
MicroDrive (fits the same as a CF card, except it's a real
drive) that should improve things some. 

AFAIK, there is no way to add actual RAM. I've never heard
of any success in setting up external DRAM as you describe.
You'd have to hand-build the hardware and hand-write a
driver, and it still would have little chance at success,
IMHO. I think everything available has already been tried. 

I think you're better off installing the largest capacity,
fastest HD you can stuff in it.
