If you're lucky, it's simply that the drive is fragmented and optimizing 
it, as others have suggested, will fix it.

If you're not, it's a sign of impending disk failure, and will continue 
or even get worse as a result of the heavy disk activity that 
optimization entails.

Make sure your important stuff is backed up!
