Is the clack more of a clunk? You say that it is not a seek sound, but you may be 
unaware that if the drive can't find track 0, it will hit a hard plastic mechanical 
stop (that prevents damage to the heads) and produce an abnormal sound. It should 
*not* be a familiar sound. It's not thermal recalibration,
it's not normal seeking; it's a bad sound. It's the same behavior that became known 
among Zip drives as the click of death.

It may very well be the case that the HD suffered some damage in shipment. I agree 
with the others who advise backing up anything of importance immediately. You can then 
try reformatting and see if it helps, but I worry that you have a marginal drive.
