>Next how do I install Mac OS 9 without a built in CDROM?

Unless you have an overriding reason to use OS 9, I would strongly
warn you off... Given that the max ram on the 5300cs is 64MB, you'll
most likely have to use VM for your computer to really be usable, and
virtual memory slows these bad boys down.

For speed, go with 8.1. For features, go for 8.6 (besides, 9.x
doesn't have too many more features than 8.6, most of which people
never notice anyway). If you want the vintage feel (and some
snappiness too), drop it down to 7.5.5 or 7.6.1! 7.6.1 with the
Appearance Manager from OS 8 is awfully close to actually being OS
8... (Notably it is missing some features like HFS+ support, later
versions of OpenTransport, enhanced multi-tasking, etc.)

You can attach a CD-ROM via the SCSI port and install an OS that way,
or you can use networking... You don't have to use TCP/IP to get a
network going, so you can ignore the password for now. Is you
AppleTalk control panel also password protected?

If not, you can set AppleTalk to your ethernet card (provided the
system recognizes it) and install from across a network. Similarly,
you can do this with LocalTalk, but prepared to let the installer run
for about 12 hours... ;-)

I installed 8.5 over IRTalk once... That was an ... experience.

You can also use SCSI Disk Mode and connect your PowerBook to another
Mac via a special SCSI cable. Then your PowerBook hard drive appears
on the 2nd Mac as an external hard drive and you can install the OS
that way...

Peace,
Drew
