>AppleshareIP server (which routes appletalk over TCP/IP) Hmm, that's not the only way. OS 9 does AppleTalk over TCP/IP and Open Door Network's ShareWay IP (integrated into OS 9) does AppleTalk over TCP/IP at least as far back as OS 8 (probably older too).
Personal Web Sharing runs on port 80 (configurable) and has been included in Mac OS since way back. Of course, security goes down with the number of network tools you run... But nevermind... The System 7.x - OS 9 code base is nearly hack proof. Heck, a couple years back the Army (or was it Navy?) switched a bunch of public webservers to Mac OS because they were getting hacked too much! ;-) You really don't have to worry about a classic OS based mac getting hacked - just don't run web or file sharing and you should be safe. FWIW, I ran a web, file, and database server (PowerTower Pro) on a cable modem connection for a year without any problems whatsoever. Every now and then I'd get some jerk trying to see what was on my computer, but every time he was blocked by the Mac OS ;-) I concur about going with a hardware solution, though. My linksys box is pretty nice and has served me well for a year now. FWIW, Open Door also has a few security tools - DoorStop is a firewall, Who's There is a log analyzer for DoorStop*, Norton Personal Firewall*, and Sustainable Softwork's IPNetSentry... <http://www.opendoor.com> Peace, Drew * DoorStop Personal Edition has been bought and renamed Norton Personal Firewall.
