I've seen it once or twice... I _think_ this means that the Finder has set a flag marking the file/folder as in use and forgot to turn it off. You might try rebuilding the desktop, then deleting them again. Let me know if that helps - I can't remember how I fixed this problem, but it happened on a 6100 I had way back in the day and from time to time on other macs.
