John, ISP: Most any ISP can handle a Macintosh running anything from System 7 upwards. It's just that their support prople can't handle questions about it (many can't deal with the latest and greatest, but that's another story).
If they handle TCP/IP and PPP, you should be ok. I'm willing to bet that you can connect to AT&T with your PB520. You just need the DNS addresses and set-up info, and e-mail server information to enter into the various apps on your Mac (either Open Transport or MacTCP, and MacPPP/FreePPP/OT-PPP/Apple Remote Access, and your e-mail client). They have to give this info to other Mac users for later Macs, so it should be no problem for them to give it to you. You might have more luck with a local ISP, as they seem to be a little more helpful at providing useful information and assitance. You also might try one of the Mac ISP's; I use MacDialUp (http://www.macdialup.com) - the initial e-mail they sent after I set up my account was pretty detailed about settings and where they go. E-Mail Client: I'd recommend Eudora as an e-mail client 3.1.3 for this machine (works on a Mac Plus or later with system 7 or higher). (http://www.eudora.com/download/eudora/eudoralight/mac/english/3.1.3/eudoralight313.hqx) It's a nice basic e-mail client (I use it on my PB5300cs and Rev. A. iMac). MacOS Version: Sorry, the last MacOS version to work on 68040 processor-based Macs was MacOS 8.1. It works pretty well on them, too. Bump up the RAM on your PB520 to the max for best results. System 7.5.3 (free download from Apple, as well as the 7.5.5 updater) through 7.6.1 (still costs $) would provide a smaller RAM footprint and should run any app that is capable of running on your PB520. The only internet service provider I know that can service anything under OS8.1 is AOL - are their any others? Does anyone know if this PB 520 can upgrade to OS 8.5 or 8.6? From what I have found, it can't! John Brownsberger -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
