Hi all, I'm new to the list as I just bought an Apple- refurbished
5300cs and so far I'm thrilled with it. Here's what I'd like to do and
what I've done so far:

First, it has 8MB of RAm I applied the 7.5.3 update and bought a 3.5
amp hours battery. And we have an Apple extrenal SCSI cd drive for
loading software.

1. What is the best way to treat these batteries? So far, the life on
thenew battery is dynamite and I'd like to keep it that way, but I've
read conflicting advice regarding these NiMH batteries.

Does the Apple battery recondition utility do any good as they suggest
once a month?

Should I let the battery run down completely before I plug it in and
recharge it?

Does it hurt to remove the battery when I'm working at home and then
put the battery back in as needed?

2. Next, while I'd like to get the most performance, the RAm isn't
really an issue. It's mainly used for word processing now, but...

If I do want a RAM upgrade, is it a special 70 ns DRAM or can we use
other compatible SPEC RAM cards we have laying around?

3. I'd like to get an Ethernet PC card. Id I do, will I be able to
Appletalk with my HFS formatted disk to my husband's iBook or if not,
would reformatting to HFS+ allow me to do this and would System 7.5.3
be enough or would I need a more recent OS version?

4. Another option I'd thought of is an 802.11b card. I see that the
Orinco (fka Proxim, fka Farallon) silver cards are quite reasonable now
and Orinco lists it is compatible down to OS 7.5.2.

Will this card work on my 5300cs? I see the specs on the 5300 is a Type
II PC card- is that different than a plain PC card?

TIA for any advice, help,

Cathy
