Hi Thom -- the culprit turned out to be a newly installed bad RAM module in
my case; with that taken out the PB nods off and wakes up like a good little
camper, though (sigh) still with its original 32MB.  If you've got a RAM
card in your ce it would be worth removing it to see what happens.
