You mean regular startup chime vs. startup chime of death? If you get that something in the hardware boot process (what I mean is the initial motherboard check) failed. Could be no or bad RAM, defective ROM chip or other pieces, horribly corrupt PRAM in some cases. Others here know more, but I couldn't resist typing. Better than working. I've beaten on lots of old Macs and have rarely heard it. For me it usually comes after multiple restarts, trying to troubleshoot something else, often preceded by a black-screen sad Mac as if to say: Enough! Give it rest!
