If you have OS 9.1 available, why not try that? Just today I was testing
a 3400 with only the 16MBs onboard and 9.1 booted and ran fine with a
full extension set, but a fast HD does help keep the VM from bogging down
the PB.

I'm running 9.1 on my PPC 540Cs (pretty much the same as a 5300) with
40MBs ram and it runs fast and stable. I've got VM set to around 64MBs
and 9.1 uses about 15MBs or so. The 30GB HDs (converted ATA-to-scsi)
aren't all that fast on the scsi bus, so that much VM is _not_ slowing
down the PBs enough to make them unusable.

I'm very pleased with 9.1, as I've mentioned here previously, the much
improved PPC codebase feels faster to me than any version of OS 8. Yes,
booting takes longer but since PBs are normally slept rather than shut
down and restarted I don't feel that's a drawback.

Hey, here's a followup question, anyone get 9.2.x running on their 3400?
I'd sure like to know the trick, as major improvements were added to the
OS with that release. I've used the tools from OS9forever and they didn't
work for me . . .
