Connect the computers with the serial printer cable. Boot up with floppy, reformat and partition the drive, then install a minimal OS 8.5 (don't have 8.0) via serial cable (while watching the grass grow, but that's OK), add the GV extensions, install the full OS over ethernet. > What are your other Macs, BTW? The other computer (just one) is a 7600/120 -- unlike the 5300 it hums along causing no problems so I haven't had to find out what it's made of. But I'm sure you know, though since I hope to heaven it won't be necessary to do this "all the time" it probably wouldn't be worth while getting the cable. > As for an OS install, select the universal > install and while you'll get tons of junk you'll end up throwing away, > you should get what you do need. Alternatively, try using MacIDWannabe or > Wish I Were to spoof the installer into thinking your DT Mac is a 5300 I did a clean install last week following what seemed to be the network instructions: mounting the installation CD *from the PB side* then selecting the version "for this computer" and it seemed to work. But was this the wrong way to go about it?
