Well, for my money (ahem, what money?), I'd go for something like Musashi or Green PPC.
They are both fully functional POP3 clients (multiple accounts, even), and they are free. It should be noted that Green PPC seems to be in a perpetual beta. I had been using it for a very long time (going on 3 years now I guess) without deleting any email... Being that I'm a member of this and a handful of other LEM lists, my email database is well into the tens of thousands of messages... Green, it seems, couldn't handle that sort of volume anymore and new messages would spontaneously disappear while very old messages would exhibit wackiness (the letter "o" being replaced with "n", for instance). Still, after putting forth all that discouraging info, I do recommend Green PPC. It's easy to use, tries to pretend it's Eudora (so you can find your way around quickly if you are used to Eudora), and up until a month ago, it NEVER gave me any trouble. If you're looking for a 68k app, Musashi is good.
