I'm in the same position as Bill - well not quite, 'cos I can tell a 3400 from a 5300
;>) - but like him I'm getting the former (bought only this week).

Mine's a 3400c 180Mhz, 80MB RAM, with a 4Gig HD, so its CPU is on the low end of the
3400 scale - but the rest of it should be ample for my needs: WP, spreadsheet, and
database; not too concerned about web or email - I'll probably do that from home -
though the ability to transfer files for remote offline reference could be handy, if
anyone has any suggestions on that.

My base machine is a PowerPC 7100/80 running 8.6 - usual MS Office stuff ('98),
FileMaker Pro 2 and 3 (former also running on an ancient Classic), and a raft of
browsers (Netscape, Explorer, iCab and Opera - iCab for preference currently.)

For the moment my thoughts for stuff to go on my own 3400 are: default (reluctantly)
to Word and Excel but explore Ragtime (if I can get the damn thing to download
properly); FileMaker again, if only for consistency of file format with the base
PowerPC.

But interested in organisers - looking at Palm Desktop 2.6.3 for contact lists and
calendar/reminders; I haven't got a Palm but it looks like you can use it in
stand-alone mode without one and even exchange/update records between machines if they
both have it installed. Anyone had experience of this which they'd care to share? Or
alternatives?

As for OS, I've toyed with the possibility of 9.1 but I understand that feature-wise
it's not a "must-have" if you've got 8.6 and various extensions added already.
Suggestions on utilities/extensions which people have found useful?

Any help would be appreciated - and grateful to Bill for giving me the chance to air
it here. Sorry if it crops up in the group twice a month and it's all been done to
death before. I'm a newbie - just point me to an archive and I'll shut up.

Many thanks,
Roger

Subject: Correction: 3400c not 5300

I made a mistake. I am buying a 3400c PowerBook not a 5300. I need
suggestions for software and set up. Again, many thanks!
