I just dropped in a 20gig 5400 rpm IBM travelstar into my 1400c. Works like a dream.  
I'm not sure what the biggest drive allowed is.

I read somewhere that anything faster than 5400 wasn't really worth it on the 1400 due 
to the bus speed, but I could be wrong about that.

I'm running os 9.1 with a Sonnet G3 333 processor and this 20gig  drive is great. 
Picked it up for 80 bucks new.
