How about plugging a battery pack into the backside where the DC from 
the wall-wort goes in? Voltage is voltage, right?  No requirement to 
sense the battery with the "intelligent" circuitry and the usual 
battery slots would be empty.  Wasn't just such an arrangement sold 
years ago...a flat battery pack that sat under the PB (same 
footprint) and plugged in?
