the wall-wort goes in? Voltage is voltage, right?  No requirement to
sense the battery with the "intelligent" circuitry and the usual
battery slots would be empty.  Wasn't just such an arrangement sold
years ago...a flat battery pack that sat under the PB (same
footprint) and plugged in?

They still these devices, as you can see in any MacWarehouse or MacZone
catalog. The Batteries PLus near my house sells a few different ones,
designed to meet the different voltage requirements of varying
manufacturers. They are not cheap, of course, because they generally do not
use standard AA or AAA sized cells, but rather a cell called a "prismatic"
cell, that I haven't found for much less that $14 a piece! (1.2v, 600mAh)
(They are available in many different voltages)Of course, you could build
your own with AA type cells and it would be a bit thicker, but as long as
you wired them all in order to achieve the desired voltage at the output.
