I would imagine the reason these have stuck around as opposed to the older 
ones is due to Apple's ambiguous naming. If I say I have a "Powerbook G3", 
that could be something like a half-dozen different models, some quite 
different. On the other hand, if I say I have a "Powerbook 520" or "Duo 
280c", it's quite easy to tell exactly what I have and what it is. Because 
of that, the code names have become commonplace.
