It will NEVER work for Appletalk. Only for "serial" connections. So it will work for zmodem file transfers, or for talking to your Newton messagepad via SERIAL :), it's great. Maybe even for printing to old serial (but NOT LOCALTALK-only printers (like my old laserwriter NTR is...). BTW Keyspan is the USB to serial that works better under OSX, Belkin has problems and usually the recommended fix is to get a Keyspan one. Still, it's serial-only, never for any type of appletalk (localtalk) connection. I mention this as the original poster has an ibook which might just have OSX. The USB to serial adapters are just that. Serial only. They don't pass appletalk packets and never will. I don't think that even MacIP will work since that sorta bundles TCP/IP info into localtalk (sorta), and for sure the localtalk won't get across, but I might be wrong about that. I would have tested it with my messagepad, but there is a bug using the MP's MacIP with IPNR (search Sustainable sofwares forums for details), and the only other MacIP server option was too expensive to buy for me to play with even in demo.
