Hi gang, It was very nice to see an initial post receive so many responses. I belong to the pentax users photographer's mail list, which has quite heavy traffic (+100 posts every day). Surprisingly though, Unless the topic you pose is on the "cool to discuss" topics list, you don't get many responses.
As I said in my first post, I have a 1400 with a 400mhz G3 card, and a 30 gig hard drive, sys 9.1, the max ram (ughh, 64! My desktop Mirrored doors dual CPU G4 screams along with over 1 gig of RAM, so its like a whole new world on the powerbook. One thing the powerbook has done, is re-introduced me to AppleWorks (or it was Clarisworks the last time I used it extensively...) and I gotta tell you, that is one robust program, if you sit down and learn all its capabilities. I was getting spoiled on M_______ S___ Word for OS X; it is without a doubt the Cadillac of word programs; but Appleworks is almost as exceptional, and since I'm at University to be a teacher in High School A thorough knowledge of appleworks would be very appropriate... Most of the classrooms I visit use Claris and Appleworks extensively, especially the intended schools of future employment, which are the Catholic Parochial schools which are almost as numerous as public school, here in the hotbed of Roman Catholicism, which I can say, since I'm catholic too...(a second career, some say I'm headed through MidLife crisis; but at least when I'm done I'll be an educated old person...) But, I'm wandering here. My intended topic is the powerbook 2400. I'm wondering what the general consensus here on the list is about this machine. I've tried to snare one or two on ebay, but the price keeps going higher than I think it ought to cost! The 1400 is an exceptional machine, EXCEPT for that dang RAM limit. BTW, I've tried installing more than 64 megs of RAM, and as many of you who tried this know, it didn't boot. Why is that??? Isn't there a genius out there in the powerbook list (we do have the majority of the smart people, just take a stroll through the halls of the PC laptop lists--you'd think they were talking about Pizza boxes... Oops, wandering again... What about the 2400? Is there somewhere that you can get one without having to bid against some Japanese or Taiwanese collector who's going to bid one dollar higher, no matter what you bid? Seems to me, they should be slightly higher than the 1400 in their ability to handle more RAM, and I do believe they are G3 upgradeable too, right? The super small size is a "wow, cool" factor that negates the inability to have your zip drive or CD ROM drive mount in the body-- so that is neither a plus nor a negative, in my mind... So, I believe a proper price for the 2400 should be $250-$300, not CPU upgraded. Is that about right? Is this "cult favorite" thing about the 2400 a new thing? is it temporary, do you think? Or has the 2400 always been popular with the "disposable money," what's in fashion? crowd? OK, that's all. I'm starting to grow roots to this computer. -- Greetings from CajunLand USA, South Louisiana-- Sid Barras "Inebriate of Air--am I-- And Debauchee of Dew-- Reeling ---thro endless summer days-- >From inns of Molten Blue--" -Emily Dickinson c. 1860 -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
