Because it's a built-in limitation of the motherboard design. Fixing it 
would require re-engineering the mobo, It was far easier to just let 
Apple do it (they called it the 3400) :-P

And there's always been a cult thing with the 2400...I've never seen 
reasonable prices for one. The people I know with them are of the 'pry 
it out of my cold, dead fingers' persuasion about it.
