Last weekend I found a 5300ce at a yard sale: the seller "supposed" it
worked, but the battery was dead and he'd lost the power adapter so couldn't
guarantee anything, therefore it was only $20, refundable if I brought it
back in the next couple of hours. It has more memory than my 5300c, and a
bigger HD, and a better screen, and a faster processor, and besides, who
could resist a deal like that?

It does indeed seem to work, under system 7.5.2 to start with, but I
upgraded to 7.5.3 and then immediately to 7.5.5. SCSI disk mode didn't get
anywhere -- the desktop Mac froze on startup when connected that way -- but
I got all the files transferred over a serial cable, and installed the
software for the GV combined ethernet/modem card which had been in the
5300c, and put the card in the slot.

The card appears on the desktop, all its extensions are operative, but
AppleTalk absolutely refuses to connect via Alternate Ethernet; every time I
try to switch the connection there's an alert saying "An error occurred
attempting to use Alternate Ethernet. Make sure your network connections
are correct." File sharing works fine over the printer cable. I put the
card back in the 5300c; the ethernet connection works perfectly from there.
The modem part of the card works perfectly in both computers. I've also
disabled extensions, trashed preferences, and so on -- nothing does any
good.

Otherwise, the computer is impeccible (almost): it refuses to open the
Token Ring" CP ("because not enough memory is available" ?!?), and the
battery indicator on the control strip doesn't indicate how much time is
available, though the little cells do go up and down predictably, but
neither of these little quirks bother me particularly, and are mentioned
only on the off chance that they might in some way be diagnostic.

Anybody got any bright ideas? I hate to give up on the ethernet connection,
but in every other respect this does seem to be a much better PB.

TIA,
Victoria
