My problem: >> The [GV ethernet/modem] card appears on the desktop, all its extensions are operative, but >> AppleTalk absolutely refuses to connect via Alternate Ethernet
Dan asked: > Did you use the installer or just manually copy the extensions to the new > PB? I can't recall specifically about the GV driver but many other NICs' > installers place a resource in the System file. Yes, the installer for *everything*. The system stuff was all downloaded, the GV software came from the original disks that came with the card. The whole procedure was exactly the same (as far as I can recall) as on the 5300c which just got a complete brain transplant with the same system a week or so ago -- and everything works perfectly on that machine. And John Smith suggested a rather cumbersome procedure that got a different card working: > Anyway, purely by coincidence, I found out that the 'book doesn't like to > have the card plugged into it when alternate Ethernet is already selected in > AppleTalk & TCP/IP. that I'll try experimenting with. But I gotta hunch my problem is different: it's not that the server doesn't appear in the Chooser, but that I'm not allowed to select alternate Ethernet at all, there's always the same error message and back it goes to printer/modem port. One possibility: I'd intended to do a clean system install, but got started before remembering that in system 7.x it's necessary to rename the system folder & file first. Maybe it would be worthwhile to go back and reinstall? Thanks much, Victoria -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
