yup, dan was right, turned out to be a bum foot on my 3400. took 'em both out, swapped 'em and sure enough a small piece was broken on one

You need to replace just the foot, the spring and release button should be OK. Press in the foot release button _all_the_way_and_then_some_, the foot will just pop out the bottom. A replacement can come from a 190, 5300, 3400 or a Kanga, they all use the same part (same both sides as well) and it shouldn't cost more than a buck or two.
