Did you try fiddling around with the contrast settings?

I know on both my 520 and 190cs (which is pretty much the same as a 5300) 
if somehow the pram gets reset the computer will boot up withe the 
contrast set so high that its just a very very bright screen with nothing 
of any real value displayed on it, although it makes for a good lamp.

It took me a day or two to figure out it was the contrast level.
