Hmm.  Are you thinking of FireWire Target Mode?  Up to 9.2.2, my 
books still run in SCSI _Disk_ Mode.

Also, IIRC, in Drive Setup my 5300ce appears with a bullet next to 
it's name when in SDM.  None of my other external disks do this.

It seems to me that the SDM software/firmware/hardware could provide 
a unique identifier to Drive Setup (you know - just like how 
SCSIProbe identifies the Vendor and Product names for the disk) that 
would prevent DS from low level formatting disks in SCSI Disk Mode. 
Say something like if Vendor || disk-name = Apple PowerBook 
<something or other disk>, don't Low Level Format.  Seems obvious to 
me.

Nah, Apple was just lazy.  Drive Setup is hardly "so good."  There's 
plenty of room for 3rd party products like Hard Disk Toolkit.
